Trauma Sensitive Yoga

Overview

Trauma-sensitive yoga (TSY) is a therapeutic yoga practice that aims to help people who have experienced trauma feel more comfortable in their bodies and regulate their emotions.

Our TSY therapist has completed 500 hours in Yoga Training (RYT-500) and is a certified TSY facilitator (TCTSY-F).

TSY classes differ from traditional yoga practices in a few ways:

  • Teachers are aware that students may have experienced trauma.

  • Teachers offer options to make students feel less vulnerable.

  • Group sessions don't involve participants sitting in a circle.

  • TSY classes avoid spiritual traditions that are commonly associated with yoga.

  • TSY classes avoid postures that could be triggering

  • Our TSY therapist can consult with your individual therapist to ensure this is a good fit for you.

The TSY methodology is based on central components of trauma theory, attachment theory, neuroscience, and yoga philosophy and practice.

Although TSY employs physical forms and movements, the focus is on the internal experience of the participant —what the forms feel like instead of what they look like.

This shift in orientation, from the external to the internal, is a key attribute of TSY as a complementary treatment for complex trauma.

Further, by focusing on the felt sense of the body to inform choice-making, TSY provides opportunities for participant store their connection between mind and body and to cultivate a sense of agency that is often compromised as a result of surviving trauma.
